Carved hardwood head and shoulders with a dark, nearly black surface, the oval face with arched brow ridge, narrow incised eyes, ridged nose and parted lips revealing a row of white teeth, with small projecting pierced ears, the crown dressed with a banded coiffure beneath a pair of tall tapering horns. Set on a ringed columnar neck above squared shoulders and a flaring base, the reverse flattened and plainly worked, the underside solid and unfinished.
Condition
Good. Solid and stable, with no breaks or restoration evident. Dark surface worn throughout to the reddish brown wood on the high points — horn tips, brow, nose, cheeks, shoulders and base edges — the flattened reverse rubbed over much of its surface. Age checks and drying cracks to the shoulders, the reverse and across the unfinished underside, none structurally threatening. Scattered nicks, scuffs and abrasions overall, with minor losses to the horn tips and base rim, and small white paint or plaster flecks along the lower edges. A bent wire remnant of an old hanging fitting remains at the back of the head. Teeth present and intact. No marks or labels found.
