• Lot Description
  Reverie, 1933 Patinated bronze on black marble base, signed and dated verso. A serenely modeled female head with closed eyes and flowing hair, executed in a refined Art Moderne idiom characteristic of Eckhardt's early Cleveland School period following her studies under Alexander Archipenko. Eckhardt (1905–1998), born Edythe Aline Eckhardt and a graduate of the Cleveland School of Art (1932), was a leading figure of the Cleveland School and a pioneering woman in twentieth-century American sculpture and studio glass. Supervisor of the WPA Federal Art Project's ceramic division in Cleveland from 1935 to 1941, she later taught at the Cleveland Institute of Art for nearly three decades. Her many honors include two John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowships (1956, 1959) — making her the first Ohio artist to win the award twice — a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Fellowship (1956), and a Cleveland Arts Prize Special Citation (1971). Her work is held in more than fifty museum collections worldwide. Provenance: The Collection of Joseph and Elaine Kisvardai, Cleveland, Ohio.
