An exceptional example of Japanese Meiji-era artistry, this covered censer (koro) features an ovoid body with ornate twin handles, sitting atop three bracket feet. The piece is richly decorated in polychrome enamels and gilding, displaying a continuous panoramic scene of elegant figures in traditional kimono set against a lush landscape of temples, mountains, and gardens. The lid is pierced and adorned with intricate floral motifs in high relief, including peonies and chrysanthemums in soft pastel tones and rich gold highlights.
The craftsmanship and dense decorative style suggest this was a high-end piece, likely created for export during the late 19th to early 20th century. The mark on the underside, framed in black and gold, confirms Japanese origin and may correspond to a known Satsuma or Kutani kiln.
Condition
Excellent overall condition with fine age-appropriate craquelure typical of Satsuma ware. Some expected wear to gilding and minor surface marks. No visible cracks or repairs.
