The Aesthetic period, was a short lived artistic movement from 1870 to about 1890. The goal was to create art that prized beauty above all. The norms of the Victorian era were rejected, morality was to play no role in the art from this school. Natural forms; birds, flowers, reptiles and insects were the subjects preferred. This pair of candle sticks is unique, as it is made from bronze castings that simply screw into each other. The base with a ring of flowers on a vine, the knop, a simple dome shape occupied by beatles. A simple tapered candle cup with no extra embellishment. Light brown patina on a matte surface, mutes the bronze, a favorite presentation during the period.
Condition
Good overall. One candle cup needs adjustment, as well as straightening of the stem on one stick. Bronze is highly malleable, and the adjustments are not cumbersome.
