A 22 1/2" wide x 24 1/4" tall tapering bulbous top has a scalloped surround at the widest part, tapering to a cavetto then expanding to a 7" plain rounded section, with a lip to engage the opening of the base when assembled. One side features two three dimensional cockerels, the other a single three dimensional bird. The cockerel symbolizes courage and intelligence, and is depicted in Japanese art as a Devine Messenger. The base is a cylinder that flares like a trumpet, meeting a larger diameter with a cast in decorated border. A thee dimensional dragon encircles the base, a symbol of untamed power, but also a source of wisdom. The handles are a depiction of an Oni, traditionally a symbol for disaster and brutality. As the centuries past, the characterization of thew Oni changed, it became a symbol to ward off evil. Many buildings in Japan today have a Oni mask for protection from evil. Top section weighs 45 pounds, thew base 18 pounds.
Condition
Very good overall. The top is quite heavy and one handle is somewhat loose. The handles were not designed to be a lifting aid. Best not to use the handles when moving the top.
