Very heavy gilt bronze cast sculpture of Shakyamuni Buddha in Dharmachakra Mudra with large halo with floral-foliate and vine design with two mythical figures by the sides, on lotus throne, weighs 33 lb; front of the base decorated with a pair of deer flanking the Dharma Wheel (a powerful symbol representing the Buddha's first teachings and the act of receiving them.) further flanked by five 3D kneeled figures (it's often associated with the Five Buddha Families, the Five Wisdoms, and the Five Elements). Sides of the base decorated in relief with "winged rams" or more precisely, "winged celestials," are a common imagery motif, often associated with flight and the ascent into the ethereal realm, symbolizing spirituality and divine presence. They flank Makara, a legendary sea-creature (they are considered guardians of gateways and thresholds, protecting throne rooms as well as entryways to temples).
High-relief Tibetan Stupa at the back (as depository for Buddha relics).
Condition
Good, nice patina, sporadic oxidation with verdigris.
