• Lot Description
  A Mende sowei helmet mask, Sierra Leone, associated with the women's Sande (Bundu) society, carved wood with a deep blackened patina. Of characteristic helmet form to be worn over the head, the serene face with downcast almond eyes, finely arched brows, a slender nose and small pursed mouth, framed by an elaborate crested coiffure of projecting conical plaits about a central knob with incised hairline bands, rising above the characteristic ringed neck. Pierced with a row of holes around the lower rim for attachment of the raffia and cloth costume. 20th century. Provenance: lifetime private collection, Dr. Martin and Lisa Earle, Pittsburgh, PA.

  Condition

  Carved wood with a thick, dark encrusted patina, with areas of natural surface loss revealing lighter wood beneath, consistent with age and use. Scattered shrinkage/age cracks, including to the crest projections and within the hollowed interior; minor chips, nicks, and abrasions to high points. Interior with old darkened patina and expected wear; rim attachment holes intact. No obvious repairs. Not examined under magnification.
