• Lot Description
  A pair of French Louis XVI style ormolu (gilt bronze) chenets (andirons), 19th century. Each surmounted by a lidded campana-form urn with leaf-tip pine-cone finial and gadrooned body, flanked by cast ram's-head (bélier) handles supporting laurel husk-swag drapery centered by a rosette boss, raised on a square socle. The stepped rectangular plinth fitted with a pierced gallery cast with foliate scrollwork centering a rosette patera, flanked by fluted side pilasters with applied husk-swag drapery and outer corner pedestals bearing pine-cone finials, all on block feet. Iron back-arms for log support, of typical chenet form.

  Condition

  Good. Overall oxidation and rubbing to the original mercury gilding with grey-green patches and exposed bronze visible at high points, particularly to the urn lids, ram's-head horns, and stepped feet. Surface dust and accumulated soot consistent with fireplace use. Iron back-arms with old oxidation and minor pitting. No major losses or repairs noted.
