Carved wooden female figure from the Latmul people of the Middle Sepik River region, Papua New Guinea. The boldly painted face features traditional tribal scarification patterns, accentuated with white, red, and black pigments. The body is adorned with raffia fiber bindings, enhancing its ceremonial presence. Provenance: private collection, Pittsburgh, PA; brought from Papua New Guinea in 1970's.
Condition
Good condition with natural wear and patina consistent with age. Some minor pigment fading and surface abrasions but structurally sound, old restoration to one foot. Raffia fiber attachments remain well-preserved, but shading.
