• Lot Description
  A Peruvian folk-art retablo in the Ayacucho tradition, the wood case of gabled form with a scalloped painted pediment and a pair of hinged doors, the exteriors brightly painted with stylized red and green flowers on a white ground. Opening to a two-tier interior densely populated with modeled and polychromed figures: an upper Nativity scene with the Holy Family, shepherds, magi, and animals beneath a radiant star, over a lower register of costumed Andean villagers and musicians. Retained by leather-strap hinges and metal hook clasps. 20th century.

  Condition

  Overall good condition as a hand-painted folk object. Leather-strap hinges dried and cracked, one torn/partially detached; metal hook-and-eye clasps present. Scattered soiling and surface grime overall. Painted surfaces with craquelure and scattered chips and pigment losses, chiefly to door edges and corners. Modeled figures appear intact and stable with minor paint wear; not individually removed or counted. No maker's signature observed.
