An Italian polychrome wax profile portrait of Bianca Cappello (1548–1587), Grand Duchess of Tuscany, likely Florentine, late 19th/early 20th century, after the Renaissance prototype. The half-length bust depicts the sitter facing sinister with auburn hair dressed in a pearl-and-gold tiara-form ornament, wearing a pearl-drop earring, strands of turquoise beads and pearls, a Venetian needle-lace collar, and a richly embroidered crimson and sage-green Renaissance gown with gold passementerie. Set behind convex glass within an oval giltwood and gesso frame with gadrooned and ribbon-twist molded border, inscribed in black on the gilt slip "BIANCA CAPPELLO 1576." Reverse retains the original green and cream block-printed damask paper backing. Bianca Cappello, the celebrated Venetian noblewoman who became the second wife of Francesco I de' Medici, was a favored subject for Italian ceroplastic portraits in the 19th century, her likeness popularized by the Medici-period portraits held in the Uffizi Gallery.
