American Chippendale mahogany highback corner chair, in the manner of the Goddard and Townsend Families, likely Newport, Rhode Island, 18th c., having scrolled top rail, above vasiform splats, padded slip seat in later striped fabric upholstery, front cabriole leg headed by acanthus, tapering back legs, on open-talon ball and claw feet, small area of missing trim to central front leg, approx 44.5"h, 29"w, 25.5"d, seat height: approx 19"h **Provenance: The Tarrytown, Austin, Texas estate of Janice Holliman Stanfield**
10.23.25 - In my opinion regarding LOT: 3270 – in my opinion, the chair is an unusual and distinctive example, in stable and sturdy condition and sitting comfortably with joints remaining secure, I am not an expert on such chairs and have included detailed images for your review, the wood exhibits tonal variation, rubs, nicks, and minor losses, with some visible seams, all stable, including one along the curved back which appears original to its construction rather than a repair, however I cannot be sure, the central front leg shows a small area of missing trim to the left side as pictured, the talon and ball feet are well carved with raised claws displaying fine detail, all mentioned wear and imperfections are minor and commensurate with age and use
Detailed condition reports are not included in this catalog. For additional information, including condition reports, please utilize the ASK A QUESTION tab found in each lot.
