A. E. Backus (American, 1906–1990)
Alfred Ernest Backus, widely regarded as the “Dean of Florida Landscape Painters, †stands as one of the most important figures in Florida’s 20th-century art history. Celebrated for his evocative depictions of the state’s natural environment, Backus rendered wetlands, pine forests, rivers, and expansive skies with a distinctive style informed by American Impressionism and Tonalism. His masterful use of color, light, and atmosphere conveys a profound sense of place and remains a defining contribution to regional American landscape painting.
In addition to his accomplished body of work, Backus played a pivotal role as a mentor and guiding influence on the artists later known as the Florida Highwaymen. While not a formal instructor, he offered instruction, critique, and encouragement to several members of the group, shaping their approach to composition, palette, and plein-air technique. His legacy extends beyond his own canvases, having helped foster a movement that would bring national recognition to Florida’s artistic heritage.
