Early American Watch Co. (Waltham, Mass.) pocket watch – keywind movement – full hunter silver case – serial #334176 – circa 1860s.
Description:
A fine example of early American horology, this American Watch Co. pocket watch showcases the high-quality craftsmanship of the Waltham, Massachusetts factory during the mid-19th century. The movement bears the inscription “American Watch Co., Waltham, Mass.” and serial #334176, dating its production to approximately 1867.
This is a keywind, keyset movement, part of Waltham’s early series that helped establish the United States as a world leader in precision watchmaking. The movement features finely gilded plates with intricate hand-engraved scrollwork, blued-steel screws, and a visible regulator marked “Fast / Slow.” The serial and plate configuration identify this as part of the Model 1857 family — one of Waltham’s most significant and collectible early designs.
The dial is a classic white enamel with black Roman numerals, a seconds subdial at 6 o’clock, and slender blued-steel spade hands. The dial and crystal are set within a traditional full hunter case, designed to protect the face and mechanism.
Inside the covers, multiple hallmarks and stamped numbers appear, including “A61” and “5★ A61”, denoting a solid and well-crafted coin silver case — a composition typical of mid-19th century American pocket watches. The case interior also bears the bright mirror finish and inner dust cover consistent with high-grade protective cases of the era.
Value and Sale Information:
As one of Waltham’s earliest successful movement designs, the Model 1857 represents a pivotal moment in American watchmaking history. Collectors value these for their technical importance, hand-finished movements, and enduring mechanical design.
Comparable examples of American Watch Co. Model 1857 pocket watches in silver full hunter cases typically realize between $500 and $800, with well-preserved and fully functional examples commanding premium values.
This piece, with its attractive case, clean gilded movement, and strong aesthetic appeal, is valued around $625.
