A fine example of late 19th-century American horology, this pocket watch by the Elgin National Watch Company demonstrates the refined craftsmanship and enduring mechanical quality that made Elgin one of the premier watchmakers of its era. Produced circa 1895, this timepiece blends elegant design with reliable performance.
The white enamel dial, signed “Elgin”, features black Roman numerals, a sub-seconds register at 6 o’clock, and slender blued-steel spade hands. The dial remains in good antique condition with faint age wear and retains strong legibility.
The nickel-finished 15-jewel movement is finely damaskeened and engraved:
“Elgin Nat’l Watch Co., U.S.A., Safety Pinion.”
Bearing the serial number 6,081,648, this movement corresponds to Elgin’s Grade 96, a quality mid-tier model favored for its balance of precision and durability. It features a lever escapement, bimetallic balance wheel, and micrometer regulator, all housed within a polished case that was built to endure daily use over a century ago.
The 14K gold-filled case, marked by W.M. Fogg Co., U.S.A., bears interior inscriptions reading:
“W.M. Fogg Co. 14K U.S.A. – 1076143.”
The back is beautifully engraved with a starburst and leaf pattern, accented by a small inset stone at the center—likely a glass or seed-pearl accent. The hinged lids open smoothly, showing bright interiors and crisp stamping.
This example winds and sets properly; its running condition is untested and it is offered as-is.
Elgin’s Grade 96 pocket watches were among the most popular and dependable models of the late 19th century. Their 15-jewel movements offered higher-grade performance than base models, while the ornate gold-filled cases—especially those by W.M. Fogg—provided elegant presentation at a fraction of the cost of solid gold.
Comparable examples in similar condition generally range between $550 and $800, depending on cosmetic preservation and functionality.
This particularly well-kept example with a detailed engraved case and clean dial is valued around $675.
Offered for sale as-is, this Elgin 15-jewel pocket watch is a distinguished representation of American horological artistry circa 1895, balancing elegance, precision, and historical appeal.
