Offered here is a fine early 20th-century pocket watch by the Elgin National Watch Company, an American manufacturer renowned for precision and dependable design. This particular example, serial number 13,970,723, dates to approximately 1909, placing it within Elgin’s golden period of railroad-grade and gentlemen’s dress watches.
The white enamel dial is elegantly marked “ELGIN” and features black Roman numerals, a red outer minute track, and a sub-seconds register at 6 o’clock. The blued-steel spade and whip hands retain strong color and contrast beautifully against the crisp white dial. Minor hairlines are visible under magnification but do not detract from its visual appeal.
The movement is beautifully damaskeened and signed:
“Elgin Nat’l Watch Co., U.S.A., 17 Jewels, Safety Pinion.”
It displays Elgin’s signature precision machining, with a bimetallic balance wheel, micrometer regulator, and screw-set jewels—hallmarks of a high-quality turn-of-the-century timepiece.
The sterling silver case, marked by the Keystone Watch Case Co., bears the inscription:
“Keystone – Sterling – [Hallmark] – Serial No. 7450506.”
The case exhibits a soft, even patina with light engraving at the pendant and perimeter. The front and rear covers close snugly and hinge securely. The case interior remains bright, with deep, clear stamping.
This Elgin pocket watch winds and sets properly; its running condition is untested and it is offered as-is.
Elgin’s 17-jewel movements are widely respected for their quality, especially in sterling cases produced by Keystone. Collectors value these pieces for their robust build and elegant dials representative of the early 1900s.
Comparable examples typically sell between $425 and $700, depending on cosmetic condition and functionality.
This well-preserved example, featuring a desirable sterling case and fully jeweled movement, is valued around $625.
Offered for sale as-is, this Elgin 17-jewel pocket watch exemplifies the craftsmanship and reliability of American watchmaking from the early 20th century—a fine collectible for enthusiasts of Elgin’s enduring legacy.
