Vintage Gruen Guild ladies’ wristwatch – 15-jewel Swiss movement – 14K gold-filled Wadsworth case – Art Deco design – circa 1930s.
Description:
A refined Gruen Guild ladies’ wristwatch, embodying the elegance and geometric precision of the Art Deco era. This watch combines Swiss engineering with American style, featuring a finely made 15-jewel Gruen movement and a beautifully engraved two-tone case.
The movement, stamped “GRUEN GUILD A SWISS – Fifteen 15 Jewels – 1870388”, is a precision Swiss-made caliber, manually wound, and finely jeweled for accuracy. Gruen was among the first American watch companies to establish a dual presence in Switzerland, ensuring both technical quality and aesthetic excellence.
The case is stamped inside:
“GRUEN 14K Gold Filled – Reinforced with Extra Gold – Wadsworth – 5314862 OS-63”, confirming the case was crafted by the Wadsworth Watch Case Company, one of Gruen’s preferred American case suppliers. The “reinforced” marking indicates a thicker gold layer than typical gold-filled standards, enhancing durability and long-term wear resistance.
The case design features classic Art Deco geometry, with alternating polished and engraved diamond motifs at the top and bottom, framing a soft silver-tone dial. The dial displays stylized Arabic numerals, a rectangular minute track, and blued-steel Breguet-style hands, reflecting Gruen’s dedication to refined aesthetics.
The bracelet is a period two-link expansion style, harmonizing with the slim rectangular case for a complete 1930s presentation.
Value and Sale Information:
This Gruen ladies’ wristwatch represents the quintessential elegance of the Art Deco period, when timepieces transitioned from purely functional to fashionable accessories. Gruen’s partnership with Wadsworth and its use of Swiss movements ensured both technical quality and design sophistication.
Comparable Gruen ladies’ watches of this period, especially those in 14K gold-filled Wadsworth cases, typically sell between $200 and $400, depending on condition and originality.
Given its crisp case engravings, original dial, and well-preserved form, this example is valued around $325.
