Hampden Watch Co. pocket watch – 17-jewel movement – nickel silver Illinois Watch Case Co. housing – circa 1913.
Description:
A handsome Hampden Watch Co. pocket watch, representing the solid craftsmanship and American ingenuity of the early 20th century. This model features a finely damaskeened nickel movement housed in a sturdy nickel-silver case, produced by the Illinois Watch Case Company.
The movement, serial number 2539858, dates this piece to approximately 1913, a period during which Hampden was producing high-quality watches known for their precision and durability. The beautifully patterned plates display the distinctive Hampden wave damaskeening, and the watch retains its original balance wheel and blued screws.
The dial is a classic white enamel with bold black Arabic numerals and a red outer minute track, complemented by a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock. The dial is signed “Hampden Watch Co.” in flowing script and retains its original spade-style hands. Some hairline cracks and small losses are visible, typical of enamel dials of this age, but they do not detract significantly from the visual appeal.
Inside the back cover, the case is stamped:
“Nickel Silver – Illinois Watch Case Co. – 0303070.”
This confirms a nickel-silver case, favored for its strength and tarnish resistance. The watch’s clean, machined interior and matching serials indicate original factory pairing between case and movement.
Value and Sale Information:
The Hampden Watch Company, founded in Springfield, Massachusetts, and later moved to Canton, Ohio, produced well-regarded mid- to high-grade watches for both the American and export markets. Their movements were known for excellent adjustment and reliability, and by the early 1900s, Hampden was among the key suppliers of railroad-grade and professional pocket watches.
This particular watch, with its 17-jewel nickel movement and Illinois nickel-silver case, stands as a fine example of the everyday reliability that helped define Hampden’s reputation.
Comparable Hampden pocket watches from this period generally sell for $250 to $450, depending on condition and working order.
This example, with its well-preserved movement and original dial, is valued around $325.
