New York Standard Watch Co. pocket watch – 7-jewel movement – Made in USA – circa early 1900s.
Description:
A vintage New York Standard Watch Co. pocket watch, embodying the practical and dependable design of early 20th-century American horology. This example, serial number 1011223, reflects the company’s focus on durable, affordable timepieces for everyday wear.
The dial is marked “Standard”, with black Arabic numerals and an outer minute track. The subsidiary seconds dial sits neatly at 6 o’clock, a common feature of American pocket watches from this era. The watch retains its original blued-steel spade-style hands, which contrast nicely against the silvered dial. Light patina and small age marks are visible, consistent with its century-old heritage.
The movement, signed
“New York Standard Watch Co., USA – 7 Jewels – 1011223,”
is a nickel-finished, three-quarter plate movement with a bimetallic balance wheel and a regulator marked F – S (Fast/Slow). It is a manual-wind, lever escapement mechanism typical of the firm’s mid-grade models, designed for long-term reliability. The bridge layout and fine engine-turned finish demonstrate the company’s craftsmanship at its peak production years around the 1910s–1920s.
The case is a gold-tone metal with floral engraving along the bezel and bow, adding a touch of decorative refinement. The case shows mild surface wear and patination, but no structural damage or major dents, indicating it has been well cared for over the decades.
Value and Sale Information:
The New York Standard Watch Company was founded in 1885 in Jersey City, New Jersey, and quickly became one of the largest producers of affordable pocket watches in the U.S. by the turn of the 20th century. Their watches were known for their dependable construction, serving the middle market between luxury and utilitarian timepieces.
This particular model, with its 7-jewel movement and attractive gold-tone case, represents a classic working man’s watch from the early 1900s — a practical yet elegant design from an important American manufacturer.
Comparable New York Standard pocket watches of similar grade typically sell for $100 to $200, depending on working condition and aesthetic appeal.
Given the overall presentation and originality of this example, it is valued around $150.
