Swiss “Remontoir” stem-wind pocket watch – 15-jewel straight-line lever escapement – spiral Breguet hairspring – .800 fine silver case – circa late 19th to early 20th century.
Description:
An elegant Swiss-made “Remontoir” pocket watch, a fine representative of precision European craftsmanship from the late 1800s to early 1900s. The term Remontoir indicates a stem-wound (keyless) mechanism—a significant innovation over earlier keywind watches, reflecting the growing sophistication of the Swiss horological industry during this period.
The inside of the cuvette (inner cover) is beautifully engraved with:
“Remontoir No. 13760 – Ancre 15 Rubis – Ligne Droite – Spiral Breguet – Balancier Compensé”,
which translates to:
“Stem-wind No. 13760 – Lever Escapement – 15 Jewels – Straight Line – Breguet Hairspring – Compensated Balance.”
This inscription identifies a 15-jewel Swiss lever movement, adjusted for temperature variations, featuring a Breguet overcoil hairspring—a hallmark of quality in precision timekeeping. The movement itself exhibits bright gilt plates, jeweled bearings, and a fine steel regulator.
The case is marked with Swiss silver hallmarks, including a bear stamp, denoting .800 fine silver, and additional maker’s and serial marks (13760, matching the cuvette). These confirm its origin as a solid silver Swiss case from the late 19th century. The interior also bears a crown hallmark, typical of the Neuchâtel and Jura regions.
The dial is classic and elegant, with white enamel, black Roman numerals, and an outer minute track with Arabic five-minute indicators. It also features ornate gilt Louis XV-style hands and a subseconds dial at 6 o’clock.
