France, New York,1898-1962
Titled "Palma De Mallorca Street Scene" the work depicts a quaint strip of homes in Palma, the capital of the Balaeric Islands in Spain. A recumbent dog is seen in the foreground as a mother and child fill a pail of water in the background. The work is a great example of Bemelans' illustration style as seen in his Madeline series works. The painting was executed the same year Bemelmans completed "Madeline and the Bad Hat", a story revolving around the son of the Spanish Ambassador. The painting was originally purchased from Hammer Galleries then passed from mother to daughter.
Signed lower right "Bemelmans", identified and dated "Palma 56" lower left.
