The Death of Major Peirson, 6 January 1781, engraving on thick laid paper, 19-5/8 x 29 in. (sheet); gilt wood frame,. Condition: restoration to some tears, trimmed at top and bottom of plate, hinged in; frame with abrasions. Notes: When John Singleton Copley revealed his painting publicly in May 1784, the public responded with praise and enthusiasm. John Boydell, already a successful engraver, was given permission to make an engraving after the painting. Before it reached its final state it was exhibited. The engraver is not known for this point. It is perhaps a proof before finished text or a folio engraving.. Provenance: Collection of Anne McPherson and the Late John Bivins, Jr.
