probably Southern, late 18th/early 19th century, attractive ribbon figured mahogany top, square tapered legs, string inlay to top edges and legs poplar and mixed secondary woods, 29-3/4 x 36-1/4 x 18 in.
Provenance: Bequeathed to the Thomas Jefferson Foundation by Mary Frances Petty in 2007; Property deaccessioned by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, Inc. These objects were never owned by Thomas Jefferson. They are not directly related to Thomas Jefferson or Monticello itself, and therefore fall outside the Foundation’s collections scope. Proceeds will be used to benefit the conservation and acquisitions fund.
Literature: This lot is illustrated in Susan R. Stein, The Worlds of Thomas Jefferson at Monticello (Harry N. Abrams, New York City, 1993), p. 285, cat. no. 173.
Note: Although this table was originally thought to have been owned by Jefferson and possibly made at Monticello, this is no longer believed to be the case, and the history of the donor's family do not conclusively support a link to the purchaser of the table from the Dispersal Sale in 1827.
