attributed to the Collin Rhodes Factory, Shaw's Creek, Edgefield District, South Carolina, circa 1850, olive green to brown alkaline glaze, blackish speckled glaze runs to rear mid body of jug, large ovoid form, applied kaolin slip "3" encircled by a small applied kaolin "sunflower" decoration, "M.L. Brown & Co. Columbia S.C." applied kaolin script across front body of jug, applied kaolin underline accents under the "S.C." on lower body of jug, thick arched strap handle at shoulder, spout with tightly tooled neck and rim, 15 in. tall, 36 in. circumference

Note: There are a few of these Collin Rhodes attributed South Carolina merchant jars have come to market in recent years, they are decorated with the kaolin slip inscription "J.A. Hendrix & Co. Lexington CH, S.C.", a jug with the same kaolin inscription resides in the collection of the Charleston Museum, other examples of these works have traded hands privately with different merchant inscriptions, the jug we are offering here is the only piece known at the time of cataloging to have the "M.L. Brown & Co., Columbia, S.C." inscription.

Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction, or will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
