attributed to J. Howard & Co., Bridgewater, Massachusetts, probably second half 19th century, in heavy cast zinc and molded copper, patinated surface with gilding over verdigris, the front with faint traces of red pigment, 37-1/2 in. long, 19-1/2 in. high including modern stand

Note: This dynamic running horse form is rare among surviving J. Howard attributed examples. One example is formerly in the collection of John Gordon, Sold Christie's New York, 19 January 1999 lot 396 for $68,500; Another example from the collection of Dorothy Kaufman is illustrated in Miller, The Art of the Weathervane, p. 21-22.

Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction, or will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.

A striking form that presents very well. Later gilding with wear over verdigris, zinc elements with some very small areas of infill and possible repair especially on top of nose (possibly as made, see detailed images), complex surface history with some small areas of accretion that may be traces of original gilding (see details of nose), leg solders are stable but fragile. Please refer to the detailed photos or preview in person and make your own assessment.
