Note: Santiago Carbonell was born in 1960 in Quito, Ecuador, to a Catalan father and an Ecuadorian mother. In 1961, his family moved to Barcelona, Spain, where he spent his childhood and teenage years. He began drawing at age eight and decided to become a painter at seventeen, influenced by the Informalist movement and artists like Antoni Tàpies. During this time, he also explored Cubism and Surrealism, particularly through the work of Salvador Dalí, before committing to realism. In 1986, Carbonell immigrated to Mexico, where he married María Gabriela Miranda and started a family. He is the father of four children and currently resides in Querétaro. Known for his technical mastery and self-taught discipline, Carbonell has become a leading figure in hyperrealism. However, he emphasizes that his goal is not to replicate reality or photography, but to invent from them, creating new perspectives rooted in observation.
