(Italian, 1852-1929)
The Marvasi Fisherboy, signed verso "Gemito/ Proprieta Artistica", patinated bronze on circular antiquity-styled bronze base, 9-1/2 x 9-1/4 x 9-1/4 in.
Provenance: A Private British Collection; Martel Maides Auctions, Guernsey, United Kingdom, November 16, 2018, Lot 861; A Private Habersham County, Georgia Collection; Private Collection
Note: Around 1876 Gemito focused on the theme of the pescatore (fisher boy). After executing many drawings, he modelled two sculptures. The first was Il Pescatore Marvarsi of a young nude boy kneeling on a rock and holding a fish in his hands, which was a commission for the prefect of Naples, Diomede Marvarsi.
Literature: Illustrated and described in Vincenzo Gemito: Drawings Sculptures in Naples & Rome, catalogue by Katherina McArthur and Kate Ganz, Kate Ganz USA Ltd, New York, New York, #2, pages 10-11. The catalogue was produced to accompany an exhibition of Gemito’s works in New York from January 22-February 27, 2000. An example of Il Pescatoriello was one of the bronzes exhibited.

Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction, or will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
