A striking example of mid-century California studio pottery by Doyle Lane (1925–2002), this small-scale weed pot is a testament to Lane’s mastery of glaze chemistry and organic form. Measuring 2.5 inches high by 3.25 inches in diameter (approximately), the piece features a flattened, rounded body with a narrow, flared neck—an iconic silhouette within Lane's body of work.
The surface is richly layered with a complex, high-gloss glaze in deep charcoal, bronze, and silvery ash tones, creating a celestial, almost atmospheric pattern. The textured surface and varied coloration highlight Lane's experimental firing techniques and deep understanding of ceramic materials. The base bears his impressed signature mark.
Doyle Lane, a celebrated African American ceramicist based in Los Angeles, is known for his weed pots, murals, and tactile glazes. His works are held in the collections of LACMA, the California African American Museum, and the Smithsonian.
