Redfields summer home was located in Boothbay Harbor Maine, where he worked throughout the summer and into early autumn. In Maine, he also painted on Monhegan Island, a boatride from Boothbay Harbor. Redfield, Robert Henri and Rockwell Kent were among the first artists to paint Monhegan. The island eventually became a popular destination for artists, and remains so today. Summer Woodlands was painted on one of the islands pathways leading to wooded areas.
