Charles R. Knightﾒs Leopard with Flamingo is one of the artistﾒs most sophisticated and celebrated portrayals of contemporary animal life. ﾠPainted in 1900, it entered the collection of Henry Fairfield Osborn, the distinguished palaeontologist and patron of the artist. ﾠExhibited at the American Museum of Natural History in 1914, it elicited the praise of one of Knightﾒs teachers, George de Forest Brush. ﾠWriting that year Mary Dickerson reported, ﾓYet when we look at such a painting as the ﾓLeopard with Flamingoﾔ which Brush pronounces of great imaginative merit ﾖa picture good in composition, splendid in technique, fine in drawing, beautiful in color, we distinctly feel that criticism is in vain, that no other painter in America has perhaps ever done so fine a pure art thing of animals.ﾔ
