Early Civil War or Pre Civil War tintype photograph of an officer wearing a United States militia uniform with gilded buttons and insignia, and a Mexican War Wheel Cap. Sixth plate size, in a pressed leather union case 4 in. H x 3 in. W. Note: this tintype has descended in the family of Hubbard H. Saunders (1819-1879) of Sumner County, Tennessee (along with a Saunders family sugar sideboard, also in this auction). H.H. Saunders was a Civil War veteran, serving in the Confederate infantry; he also is recorded in family accounts as having fought in "the Seminole War." However, it's possible that this photograph depicts his first cousin, CSA Col. William Hubbard Saunders (b. Franklin, Tennessee, 1819- d. Mississippi, 1891), the son of Rev. Turner Saunders. By the start of the Civil War, William H. Saunders had moved to Mississippi, where he worked as a farmer and attorney. He served as Lieutenant and Captain of Company K, 27th Mississippi Infantry Regt., and in 1864 was Colonel and Judge of the Military Court for Hood's Army Corps. He survived the war and returned to Mississippi. An extant circa 1880 photograph of him (found online, not included with this lot) resembles the man in this tintype.
Image in excellent condition. Case with full separation at hinge and some wear to exterior.
