1st item: Charles Burchfield pencil on paper sketch or study, depicting clouds gathering over rolling hills. Inscribed and dated F 7-4-15 lower right. Unsigned. Framed under glass in a plain wood frame with cream mat. 10 1/4 H x 7 1/2 in W. Note: we wish to thank Nancy Weekly of the Burchfield Penney Art Center for her research into this item. Ms. Weekly notes there is an entry in Burchfield's handmade "Catalogue of 1915 Sketches" for a sketch labeled "F" matching the description of the cloud composition: "Great Cloud composition rich orange thunderheads moon coming out" and describes his lettering/numbering system in detail. Ms. Weekly also notes, "During this seemingly carefree summer between his junior and senior years at the Cleveland School of Art, Burchfield spent days wandering in fields, valleys, and woods close to his home in Salem, Ohio. He reveled in the simple pleasures of the sights and sounds around him, writing about his observations in his journals... Burchfield considered the formative year of 1915 to be when his artistic career began." Her full report is available on request. 2nd item: Alfred Pounders (American, 1931-2019) pen and ink on paper drawing depicting four figures lying on a beach as another figure, possibly an artist at an easel, looks on from a dune above. Signed in pencil "A. Pounders" and titled/dated "Truro Cape Cod 1953", lower right. Framed under glass with gray and burgundy mats in a plain black frame. 13 1/4 in W x 10 1/4 in H.
Burchfield: Pale 3/4 in spot of discoloration to lower right quadrant near mat, and some dampstaining along upper left edge (partially hidden under mat). A couple of spots of scattered foxing. Crease lower left corner. Not examined out of frame. Pounders: Light toning to paper, otherwise very good condition. Scratching and joint separation to frame. Not examined out of frame.
