- Lot Description
After Guillaume Coustou the Elder (French, 1677-1746) bronze equestrian "Horse of Marly" sculpture that depicts a rearing horse with a groom. After the original commissioned by Louis XV in 1739. Unsigned. 19 1/4 in H x 16 1/2 in W x 7 in D. 19th century, likley c. 1880-1900. Note: Guillaume Coustou the Elder served as a royal sculptor for both Louis XIV and Louis XV and was appointed Director of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1735. He is most renowned for his grand equestrian statues created for the Chateau de Marly. The originals were chiseled from Carrera marble.
Condition
Overall very good condition. A screw missing on one side of the bridle and some oxidation to the reins and one side of the saddle blanket.
