Anton Weiss (Yugoslavia/Tennessee, 1936-2019) acrylic on canvas expressionist winter landscape painting likely set in Middle Tennessee, 1970. Two red-roofed buildings reflect onto a pond from behind a stand of leafless trees and before a distant mountain range, 1970. With both pallette-knife and brushwork along with passages of impasto throughout. Signed and dated lower right. Housed in a metallic frame with textile liner. Sight: 29 in H x 39 in W. Frame: 33 5/8 in H x 43 5/8 in W. Biographical Note: Born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, and of Austrian descent, Anton Weiss grew up during World War II. Following the war, he and his family moved to Springfield and later Nashville, TN. The artist eventually relocated to New York City, where he took classes at the Art Students League before studying Abstract Expressionism with Hans Hoffman. In 1960, he returned to Nashville where he became active in the regional arts community. He served as an instructor and eventually director of the art department at the Watkins Institute and played a role in the founding of the Tennessee Art League and Tennessee Watercolor Society. Overall very good condition. Frame wtih minor abrasions and accretions.
