Southern beaten biscuit table or biscuit board with Nashville history, poplar throughout. Molded hinged top with nailed construction opening to reveal an inset marble top above a plain apron and Sheraton-style turned legs. Nailed and pegged construction throughout. 38" H x 23 3/4" W x 22" D. Late 19th century.
The top board for the cover is a 20th century replacement. Older refinished surface. Surface wear and some discoloration to wood and stone.
By oral history, this block descended in the family of Sue Weakley (1890-1965), daughter of James Harvey Weakley (1856-1937) and Mary Mai Winston Anderson (1857-1943) of Nashville. In 1921, Sue married Arch Erwin McClannahan (1888-1986). The block passed to Mary Fishburn of Donelson at Mr. McClanahan's death. It was purchased from Mrs. Fishburn on July 1988 by Charlie and Laura Barrett, and later sold to the consignor, a private Middle Tennessee collector.
