- Lot Description
Charles Kermit Ewing (Tennessee, 1910-1976) oil on canvas expressionist seascape depicting waves crashing against a rocky shore under a turbulent sky, rendered in muted colors of blue, grey, white and brown. Signed and dated "Ewing '70" lower left. Additional signature and date "C. K. Ewing" en verso to top of stretcher, partially covered by old label reading "Bette W. Bacon XX / Trust Department". Titled "Stormy Sky" in black ink along lower stretcher. Housed in a grey wood frame with a linen liner. Sight: 21 1/2" H x 27 1/2" W. Framed: 27 5/8" H x 33 1/2" W. Biography: Charles Ewing was a Pennsylvania-born painter, teacher, and lithographer. He studied at Carnegie Mellon University, Harvard, and the University of Iowa with Jean Charlot. He was a member of art associations in Pittsburgh, Atlanta and New Rochelle, and in 1938, exhibited at the National Academy of Design. He served as art consultant for the Tennessee Valley Authority and, from 1948 until his retirement, was head of the art department at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Overall very good condition. Minor scuffs and scratches to frame.
