Delaware Blue Bill drake with carved nostrils, hollow neck shelf, and a dry marbelized sap bleed paint. Made by a German Prisoner of War for Dr. Aubrey Smoot, part-time Camp POW Doctor in Georgetown, Delaware. 6 3/8 in. H x 14 in L. Circa 1944. Note: According to the Ward Foundation Inc. "Dr. Aubrey Smoot, served the P.O.W. camp when needed. One evening, while dining with Dr. Smoot, the camp commander, Capt. Dewy Baker mentioned one of their biggest problems: keeping the prisoners busy and out of mischief. Without hesitation, Dr. Smoot had the solution – make decoys. The doctor furnished the materials, white cedar, paints, and reference books, and they were in business. There were three species made: canvasbacks, redheads, and scaup, with total production about three dozen.”
General wear and losses to paint. Decoy likely with paint touch-up and re-paint.
