18th C. Powder Horn, by direct descent in the family of Dr. Thomas Walker (1715-1794), the explorer known as the first American of European descent to discover Kentucky. The horn features a domed butt cap and inscription "MADE BY DR. THOS WALKER OF VA FOR HIS VISIT TO KY IN 1750." (Note that the inscribed date appears to have been modified and the horn likely predates the inscription). Length 13". Horn is accompanied by a 1909 Society of the Cincinnati lithographed certificate of membership issued to one of the horn's previous owners, Walker descendant Bennett Hornsby Armstrong (1869-1930), grandfather of the consignor. Framed under glass in a primitive wood frame, 21 in H x 27 in W overall.
Powder Horn: Overall good condition with some wear, scratching and some tiny age related cracks and dings. Inscription has been modified at date. Certificate: Dampstaining to three corners, creasing.
The living estate of Bennett Armstrong of Alexandria, Tennessee. Armstrong is a direct descendant of Dr. Thomas Walker though Walker's daughter, Mildred Walker Hornsby (b. circa 1755, Albemarle, VA, d. 1790, Williamsburg, VA., m. Joseph Hornsby, 1769), and Bennett Hornsby Armstrong (1869-1930). A detailed listing of family line is available on request. See other related items from this family in this auction.
