Edmund Darch Lewis (Pennsylvania, 1835-1910) oil on canvas Hudson River School-style landscape with a wide river in the foreground and distant, snow-capped mountain, likely set in Pennsylvania, 1886. Signed and dated lower left. Housed in a distressed giltwood frame with nameplate. Sight: 23 1/2" H x 41 1/2" W. Framed: 29 1/2" H x 47 1/2" W. Biographical note: Edmund Darch Lewis was a leading 19th-century landscape painter in Philadelphia and a participant in the exhibitions that featured the Hudson River painters in New York. He first exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1854 and was elected an associate member in 1859 and a full academician in 1862. Known for his views of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and New England, his landscapes show the influence of his famous contemporaries Frederic Edwin Church and Albert Bierstadt. (Adapted from Michael Schantz, EDMUND DARCH LEWIS, 1835-1910, exh. cat., Woodmere Museum of Art, Philadelphia, 1985.)
