- Lot Description
Harry B. Lachman (American, 1886-1975) oil on board winter landscape painting depicting a large European home or lodge at the base of a mountain range. Signed lower left and dated 1916. Titled "Winter" on a plaque affixed to the flat giltwood frame with reeded outer molding. Sight: 10"h x 13 1/4"W. Frame: 15"H x 18"W.
Biography: Indiana born Harry Lachman studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and started his career as a magazine illustrator before becoming a successful Post-Impressionist painter both in America and Europe. He exhibited in America at the National Academy of Design, New York, as well as the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In the 1930s he turned his attention to Hollywood filmmaking. He directed Spencer Tracy's "Dante's Inferno" (1935) and several Charlie Chan movies as well as the "The Loves of Edgar Allan Poe" (1942) the horror film, "Dr. Renault's Secret" (1942).
Condition
Overall good condition. A few scattered small areas flouresce under UV light suggesting possible scattered old infill painting. Could benefit from a cleaning. A few small nicks/losses to frame molding.
