- Lot Description
Japanese regulation pattern Model 1883 Commissioned officers' naval parade sword in scabbard. Styled after the full-sized Naval Officers' kyu-gunto sword, these were required for dress parade use. Although production halted in the late 1930's, naval officers continued to carry these until the end of WWII. Stamped markings are of the Toyokawa Naval Arsenal and the Suya Company. Machine-made blade with typical nickel plating; white ray skin grip with original brass wire binding. Gilded brass hilt and scabbard fittings, decorated with sakura (cherry blossoms) and leaves. Sword is held in the scabbard by means of a small folding flap on the hilt reverse engaging a raised stud on the top scabbard locket. Wooden scabbard covered in black leather. Overall 32 1/4 in. L. Early to mid 20th C.
Condition
Wire wrapping on grip is slightly loose. Leather on scabbard shows wear.
