Minnie Clark King (American/Texas, 1876-1964) impressionist oil on canvas landscape depicting a Texas meadow filled with blooming bluebonnets, with a path through the meadow center and trees with rolling hills in the distance. Signed and dated lower right "M. Hill '31." Housed in a likely molded Arts & Crafts style frame. Sight: 17 3/8 in H x 21 3/8 in W. Framed: 23 1/4 in H x 27 1/4 in W. Biographical note: "Born in Caldwell, King lived and worked as a painter in San Antonio, where she maintained a studio in Brackenridge Park. She studied under renowned artists such as Rolla Taylor, Mary A. Bishop, Charles Hudson Cox, Henry Arthur McArdle, Robert Jenkins Onderdonk, Eloise Polk McGill, and Jose Arpa. Specializing in San Antonio scenes, King also spent two years teaching in public schools. She participated in numerous exhibitions including: Texas Artist Exhibition, San Antonio Art League (1926); San Antonio Artists Guild (1927). San Antonio Local Artist Annual Exhibition (1930, 1932); Texas Federation of Women's Clubs, Denver (1930); Elisabet Ney Museum, Austin (1933, one woman); Coppini Academy of Fine Arts, San Antonio (1954,1958-59). Overall good condition with light grime to the canvas and a few areas of vertical craquelure to the sky area. Frame with scattered minor abrasions and losses. Lower stretcher with holes associated with a name placard. Top of framed with old adhesive tape.
