British school oil on canvas bust-length portrait of Mary, Queen of Scots, after the engraving by William Holl (British, 1807-1871), itself after the original by Sir John Watson Gordon (Scottish, 1788-1864). Mary looks to the veiwer's right and wears pearls, a black veil, and a cross pendant. Behind her at right the crown rests before a red curtain. Unsigned. Housed in a gilt and molded wood frame with oval window. Sight: 27 1/3" H x 23" W. Framed: 35" H x 30 1/4" W. 19th century.
With repaired tears and retouching to lower right arm and to curtain plus frame abrasion. See UV photography. Craquelure throughout, as well as surface grime and some yellowing to varnish, espeically to white fur collar.
