Pair of Chinese Qing Dynasty portraits, ink and colors on silk, depicting a man and woman, each seated and wearing robes with civilian rank badges, possibly a golden pheasant and paradise flycatcher. The face of the woman is rendered with almost photorealistic detail. Each painting is mounted to a silk damask backing and framed under glass in matching molded, painted frames. Images: Each approximately 42" H x 23" W. Frames 51" H x 26 1/2" W. Late 19th century.
Overall very good condition, not examined out of frames. Woman's portrait has some creasing, with a few minor, small areas of wear to paint at jawline, on skirt, and in background, under 1/4". Dampstaining visible en verso of frame does not appear to have affected the image. Man's portrait has creasing and a couple of scattered spots of foxing.
The collection of Allison and John Beasley, Nashville, TN.
