Item 1: Collection of 19th c. Meiji woodblock prints mounted as a scroll. Prints include, among others: Utagawa Hiroshige III (Japan, 1842-c. 1894), "Five Story Building in the New Yoshiwara" and view of the Shinagawa railway station; Utagawa Kunisada (Japan, 1786-1865), ladies with umbrellas kabuki actor portraits including Actor Onoe Kikugoro IV as Shichiuratayu, 1860; Inoue Yasuji AKA Inoue Tankei (Japan, 1864-1889), "Opened Pond in Kinryu-Zan Temple in Asakusa" from the series Famous Views of Tokyo; Kobayashi Toshimitsu (Japan, fl. 1876-1904), "The Wealthy Chiefs Inspecting the Decapitated Heads of Enemies" triptych, 1877; and prints by Utagawa Kunisada II (Japan, 1823-1880), Utagawa Yoshiiku AKA Ochiai Yoshiiku (Japan, 1833-1904), Toyohara Chikanobu AKA Yoshu Chikanobu (Japan, 1838-1912), Yoshitoshi Tsukioka (Japan, 1839-1892), and Toshinobu Yamazaki (Japan 1857-1886). 14 1/2 in. H x approx. 180 1/2 in. W. Item 2: Japanese orihon woodblock print book with 12 kacho-e bird and flower diptychs with decorative borders. Likely fourth quarter 19th c. Closed: 7 in. H x 4 in. W. Open: 7 in. H x approx. 105 in. W.
1st item in overall good condition, with fresh colors. Prints are laid down to scroll, with surface grime, bleeding, and creasing. 2nd item separated into halves, otherwise overall very good condition, with fresh colors. Some separation to fold lines. Minor soiling to front cover and pinhole puncture to upper left corner, front cover, and lower left corner, back cover.
