- Lot Description
Album collection of early prints of photographs by Timothy O'Sullivan (American, 1840-1882). The prints, compiled by an unknown person likely around 1900-1920, represent an extensive survey of Sullivan's work during the Civil War and Clarence King Expedition, and most include handwritten captions directly on the images. There are approximately 60 Civil War related images, including visceral scenes from the Gettysburg battlefield, and approximately 40 related to the Clarence King Western expedition c. 1867-69 including shots of Native American subjects and dramatic Western landscapes. There are also 4 prints of photographic portraits of photographers Matthew Brady, Dr. John Draper, and Samuel F.B. Morse. Album overall size: 15 in x 9 1/2 in. Photos range in size from 5 in x 4 in to 8 in x 10 in.
Condition
Most of the photographic prints are adhered to pages, and several have fading, creasing, or losses. Nearly all have minor handling wear, some with light grime, and ink inscriptions. A couple of photos appear to have been removed. Pages with edge chipping. The covers of the album are detached.
