- Lot Description
James Vance Miller (West Virginia/Virginia, 1912-2002), "Glow in the Morning and Rolled Rock," Impressionist style oil on canvas painting depicting a large creek flowing through a sun-dappled, wooded landscape, with a large rock in the foreground. Signature incised in paint lower right. Titled on label en verso. Housed in a molded giltwood frame with scalloped edges having floral ornamentation. Painting: 24 in. H x 36 in. W. Frame: 29 in. H x 41 in. W. Biography: James Vance Miller began painting in 1944 as a self-taught artist, and it eventually became his full-time work. He considered his paintings done in the Jefferson National Forest outside Blacksburg, Virginia, to be some of his finest work. He exhibited at various galleries and shows throughout the South including the Fine Arts Museum of Western Virginia and the World's Fair in Knoxville, and was Artist in Residence for The Greenbrier Hotel in Lewisburg, West Virginia.
