- Lot Description
Three (3) framed scarce campaign buttons for Baseball Hall of Fame Pitcher-turned political candidate Walter Johnson, 1940. Following his retirement from baseball, the famous Washington Senators pitcher ran (unsuccessfully) as a Republican for a U.S. Congressional seat in Maryland. He used buttons featuring a baseball design, including the scarce "For Congress" button at right and the even harder to find "Primary May 6" button at left. The center button is believed to date from the opening speech of Republican Presidential Candidate Wendell Willkie's campaign in Coffeyville, KS. Johnson had grown up in the area (and was nicknamed the Kansas Cyclone),and GOP leaders chose Johnson to introduce Willkie to the crowd. All three buttons are matted and framed together under glass, beneath a black and white photograph of Johnson. Overall: 11 1/2 in x 9 1/2 in.
Condition
All items very good condition, some minor wear to frame.
