Describing the scene that inspired this painting, the artist wrote: “I’ve painted a lot of life-and-death situations in my years as an animal artist. In the course of numerous field trips to Africa, I’ve observed and recorded many stalking cats, only to see their approaches fail. I’ve also spent hours recording the bad table manners of successful feline hunters.
“But one experience stands out. At Atosha National Park in Namibia, with a bunch of fellow painters sharing the experience, I watched a wise old leopard lull a full complement of waterhole denizens into a fatal disinterest, simply by doing nothing. Finally, when a cow kudu and her two calves made their way gingerly up to the water, the cat’s seeming indifference became rapt attention. Suddenly the leopard rushed forward, right through the legs of a rearing giraffe, scattering zebras, springbok and even a few elephants. He quickly closed the gap and rode the chosen calf to the ground in a cloud of dust. Minutes later, dust clearing, the leopard lay atop the still form of the kudu, looking around as if to say, ‘Where did everybody go?’
“I got a great panorama photo of all the animals including the passive leopard and an even better one of him with his kill. All the action in between, the explosive charge, the desperate calf, the resolute cat and the final flying tackle, were caught on film by Bob Koenke, publisher of
Wildlife Art. But hey, I was there.”
