According to Borein historian Paul F. Starrs, “Borein was a highly commercial artist; he understood the commands of the market. Harold Davidson asserts that Borein’s first sale was to none other than Charles F. Lummis, the fabled publisher of California, Land of Sunshine, a publication that preceded Sunset magazine as the ultimate purveyor of California culture. Borein counted among his friends the satirist and cowboy raconteur Will Rogers. He knew Charlie Russell, who traveled to and from Santa Barbara with some frequency, and Borein would have known the legendary Western landscape painter Thomas Moran, who moved to Santa Barbara in his late years and died there. These were friends, but they were also co-religionists. They each respected the landscapes and the people of the American West.”
In 1907 Sunset commissioned this painting from Edward Borein for their March 1908 cover. At that time Sunset was the premier magazine of the West. Borein, as well as Maynard Dixon, painted and drew words for both the cover and as illustrations for articles in the magazine.
